Natwest & RBS also hit with Online & Mobile Banking issues

Filed in Banking Software , News 13 comments

Following the issues yesterday with HSBC’s systems, it seems that Natwest and RBS are also suffering difficulties and that their customers are unable to access their online banking service.  Visitors to both their sites are greated with a ‘not available’ service message.

As Natwest and RBS  are part of the same group, both of their online banking services are provided by the same system, so unfortunately it has affect both sets of customers.

Scheduled maintenance was planned between 1am and 4.30am this morning, but it seems this caused more problems than anticipated, as the system is still down at 11.30am this morning.

NatWest have informed us that there was an issue with the maintenance which led to the mobile and online banking services both being unavailable to customers, though apparently the mobile banking service should be back up and running now.

It seems that there was an additional issue with their system, which resulted in account balances not being updated overnight, though we understand that this has also been rectified.

RBS advised us that they are fully aware of the issues and that they hope to resume normal service as soon as they can:

“We aware of problems affecting our customers and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our ATM and card payment systems are operational and the majority of our customers are using these as normal. There have been problems affecting online and telephone banking but we have a good understanding of the issues and are making good progress with our recovery plans. We will keep our customers fully informed and apologise once again for the inconvenience this has caused.”

We’ll update once we receive further information from NatWest and RBS

Update @11.45pm – Systems are now back online

I have a regular lha payment go into my bank every fortnight which shows up in my account on a Sat, this weekend no sign of it! Could this be due to the online maintenace that happened on 26th? Has anyone else got similar problem?

Are we sure this is not a denial of service attack they are not owning up to?

If this is down to poorly managed systems maintenance this has got to rate in the years Top 10 industry wide outages. I am sure there will be lots of finger pointing and the testers heads on the block. I will go and have a look at The Register.com for all the dirt shortly…
